I’m sure like me, many of you guys have dreamt of that all time epic road trip! Well now I want to at least try and figure mine out, and I would love your help!
Routes?
I’m going to have to travel in one general direction right? Let’s say we start from Los Angeles and end nearly 3000 miles east, New York City. This way I will have a shorter flight home…and let’s be honest I get to look relative good in the sun before gorging on all that heavy American cuisine.
The Stopovers
(Note these may not be in order because as much as I love to travel I’m actually not that great at geography.)
Las Vegas, Nevada
I’ve always wanted to try out my well be it limited luck, at the famous Vegas strip! Along with its massive buffets, shows, and events this one has to be on everyone’s list.
Arizona
I guess everyone knows why I want to visit here … and incase it’s not entirely obviously, it’s for the epic Grand Canyon National Park. I have always wanted to look out on to this huge natural wonder. Although I should probaby be careful getting to close to the edge as I am terrified of heights.
Montana
I’ve always wanted to see the mountainous landscapes of this state, probably ever since I saw that vintage “See America – Welcome to Montana” Poster. That so far is my only reason.
Washington D.C.
Now here’s a place I’ve already visited but definitely would return to. There is still so much I want to see i.e. The Library of Congress. As unlucky as we were, to get there just as it closed on our last day in the city.
Colorado
Now my reasons behind this stop might be more Fan based than anything else. Who else watches South Park? …well this fictional town is based in Colorado and its sparked my interest in the state and I thought why not?! I mean it is my trip after all. I can already imagine myself snapchatting South Park quotes all over this state.
New Orleans, Louisiana
For any jazz or blues lovers this is probably a must see, the history of this state is filled with the musical greats. Along with their world known Mardi Gras festival and great food I dont think there is any way I could miss this out.
Miami, Florida
I used to travel to america a lot, and when I say a lot I mean pretty much every year for about 14 years. Florida was always one of the places we visited, last year I got the chance to go back after a long time away from the states. This time, as a change from our usual route, I got to spend a few days down in Miami which was great. I was even lucky enough to see a Miami Heat game at American Airlines Arena … I know I’m defintiely doing that again.
So that’s my rough plan so far, of course, I also plan to visit some amazing Americans I met while backpacking, but where else? Maybe I should check out New Mexico or Kansas!
I’m so jealous I’ve always wanted to do a road trip around America. Definitely drive along the west coast along the beautiful beaches and stop in LA to see Hollywood!
That sounds like an epic road trip you’ve planned! I’ve never done a USA road trip, so I can’t offer my suggestions…. but I want to do Burning Man next year, and hire a camper van for that….so perhaps that will end in an epic road trip too?
There is just so much to do in USA. There is Vegas and San Fransisco and Florida and Hawaii. There is no dirth of places to see there :). If you do plan, plan a long trip.
There are some great tips! We are doing an American road trip next summer across Arizona, Nevada and Utah, cannot wait!
First of all, awesome name – Flunking Monkey. How did you come up with that? Secondly, I love road trips in the USA. Over the years I’ve gone from Colorado to New Hampshire, New Orleans to Minnesota and Fernie in Canada to Yellowstone. The USA was made for road trips.
Hi there! Love your idea.
You definitely need to add Utah! Great National Parks there including Zion and Bryce Canyon.
Austin, Texas is also a great city to drive through on your way to New Orleans.
When you hit D.C. contact me we just moved here!
Now that is going to be one hell of a trip to remember. Someday America…..someday.
When I was still in my grade school, I’ve heard about USA even until today and I wonder how would be like to visit the USA. Thank you for granting me a glimpse of how it feels like to have this kind of road trip and for the places you have provided. Your pictures are really beautiful as it rhyme to your words.

I did a road trip around the US for 2 months last summer. I started in DC, NYC, Boston, Montreal, Toronto, Chicago, Watertown South Dakota, Sioux Falls, Rapid City (Badlands National Park, Custer State Park, Mt Rushmore), Bozeman to get a car and do yellowstone, grand teton, then salt lake city, Las vegas, Zion, bryce, arches, canyonlands, grand canyon, death valley back to vegas. New Orleans, Memphis, Nashville, Houston and finally Miami with a trip to Key West!!! Was exhausted after it but it was so great, had an amazing trip 🙂
Highway 101 is awesome! you must drive along there (the road that hugs the west coast). There’s nothing like driving down the Big Sur and San Fransico is an absolute must. Portland is a pretty cool place with loads of independent business selling tasty food and stumptown coffee (never liked coffee until stumptown came along) Portland seems so forward compared to other parts of America. Lots of diversity and everyone is so friendly there. Also if you’re into books it has the worlds largest bookstore (powells books) with 5 floors of reading goodness 🙂
This is going to be one hell of a road trip for sure.I’ll combine hiking and camping as well with the road trip. Safe Travels to you !
Hmm I’m not the best person for advice as I’ve only been to LA, but have a massive desire to head to NYC! Las Vegas sounds amazing though and a must-do! Hope you have a great trip!
